Fighting The Unknown

I grew up with my mom being sick, a lot. Some of my earliest memories are when I would go over to friends house to do school because my mom was too sick or when I would always visit my mom in bed. I was too young to understand what was going on. It was explained to my mom that her body was built like a high-end sports car where everything had to be working perfectly for it to run.

The hardest times for our family was when we had no idea what was making my mom sick. I remember one night with my mom laying on the couch sick and my dad praying over her because we had no idea what was going on. In the moment I felt hopeless. After countless doctors visits, tests, and trying multiple variations of medicines we eventually found out what made her sick. But, there were times when we thought she would not get better.

By Gods grace, today, my mom is healthy and is a source of comfort for those who are dealing with continued health issues.

I was the best man at his wedding, I was in his wedding, she is a co-worker, he is a friend from college, he is a friend in our community.

We all know people who are fighting some sort of health battle. The diagnosis may be known, but the outcome is unknown. The scariest part of any health issue is life after the surgery, or after the baby is born, or after the 20th diagnosis. These brave people are fighting the unknown.

The part of the story that I did not tell you was the countless people who surrounded our family to make sure we were not alone in my mom’s health journey. The dinners dropped off, the school work help with, the random checks in the mail. All of those small actions added up to huge impact to get us through that time.

The “Fighting the Unknown” t-shirt has a special purpose in the UPRIVER line up. The profit from the shirts will be used to support people in the community who are fighting the unknown.

My hope is that this piece is an encouragement they are fighting the unknown, but they are not alone.

“Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the assessment that something else is more important than fear.” — Franklin D. Roosevelt

This is dedicated to my wife, mom, dad, sister, little brother, James and Amy, Carol and Brad, Carter and his wife, Jonathan and Nicole, Reid and Ashley, Lorraine, and the countless others who know what it means to fight the unknown.
