Surviving Your First Year of Teaching

How to Avoid Quitting Your Career in the First Year

This is not your Harry Wong survival guide. This isn’t something they’ll show as a presentation in a crowded-cafeteria-turned-auditorium during the summer. And it’s not something the sweater-clad Instagram teachers looking to earn a few bucks slinging planners or sticker packets will tell you.

This is a real survivor guide from a former teacher who’s been there in the thick, teaching at one of the most challenging schools.

Why take advice from someone who quit teaching? Because I’ve been where you are wondering, can I make it? I was lucky enough to have an amazing mentor who gave me a no-bullshit view of what it meant to be a teacher. And I want to share that with you now. But also…

This isn’t your average survival guide.

I’ve got nothing to lose.

I’m not a teacher anymore. So, you don’t have to worry about any pulled punches or sugar-coatings. I’ve no admin to impress. No evaluations to survive. No parents who might read this angrily. In short, I’ve no fucks to give.

Except, about you.

I’m talking to you. You sophisticated, intellectual, capable sonofabitch.

I care about you.

Teachers are special, and they struggle constantly. But the world needs more good teachers to stick around longer. And for that to happen, there needs to be a lot more REAL conversations about what happens in the classroom.

That’s what this is.

So, I’m here to help you survive (yes, SURVIVE) your first year of teaching. Why do I say survive? Because that’s what a lot of teaching is: survival. And as long as you have that mindset and expectation, you’ll be well on your way to making it across the finish line.

This is how to survive your first year as a teacher.
