Columbine High School shooting

An event that changed a lot of things in our society was the Columbine High School shooting. It was, at the time, the worst high school shooting in U.S. history which prompted a lot of discussion about gun control and school safety. The Columbine shooting happened on April 20th, 1999. Since this was about 19 years ago, social media wasn’t as big of a deal. The big ones that are used today such as, Facebook Instagram, and Twitter, were not being used back then. However, things like the newspaper and watching the news on TV were very popular. As soon as this tragic event happened it was all over the news, with reporters getting on site and trying to get as much first-hand information as they could. Since at the time there had never been a worse school shooting, this event was a very big deal. It was every news reporters’ goal to get information on the event. Social media did not play a very big role in the moment, because as previously mentioned, the classic ones weren’t a thing yet. There were many positive outcomes because of the major media coverage. It started the discussion on gun control and school safety. Since nothing like this had ever happened before, no one realized how big of a problem it was and would end up becoming. This started a zero-tolerance rule for disruptive behavior, threats, bullying, etc. Something that was still a club when I was in high school was “Rachel’s Challenge.” Rachel Scott was one of the victims in this shooting. Before her life tragically came to an end, she had made it her life mission to be a friend to everyone and replace violence and bullying with kindness and respect. After Rachel’s death, many students reached out with their stories on how Rachel had personally impacted their lives for the better. Her family decided to start a non-profit organization called “Rachel’s Challenge.” It has now impacted around 25 million people in K-12 schools promoting kindness. My high school had a club you could be a part of where you would promote her story and her mission. With the help of social media now, #rachelschallenge is known by a lot of students. Overall, as horrific as this event was, the media was able to bring light to the issues in our culture and spread the awareness throughout the world.
