The Positive of Political Parties

George Washington HATED political parties. YES, George Washington! The first president of our great nation, the United States of America. He once warned us of the

“continual mischiefs of the spirit of party” making it the “interest and duty of a wise people to discourage and restrain it.”

When he said this, he was cautioning the American people towards political parties, saying people should not support them. But in what ways do political parties go against the continual mischiefs George Washington spoke about?

Many people agree with Washington’s thoughts on how political parties only cause mischief in government. And sure, the political parties of today do call to themselves a lot of attention and sadly most of it is negative (Donald Trump). However, as Kenneth Jana, a professor of Political Science at Northwestern University, points out “Countries with political parties have better governance than countries without parties, and those with competitive and stable party systems have better governance than those with less competitive and less stable systems.” Political parties help improve the governments of the countries who have them. If the two parties have a strong desire to win and are firmly established within the government, they can fight for the people they represent and give their people the protection they need. Political parties can help countries to create a government which is better than the governments in countries who don’t have political parties.

Another way which political parties cause a positive influence in the government is by helping people to vote. During every election, political parties gather volunteers to help registered voters and run election day voting. By doing this they are encouraging people to participate in government affairs. As the GOP puts it, “we need your help speaking to neighbors, making phone calls, knocking on doors, distributing literature, and so much more…. By signing up, you will not only learn more about volunteer opportunities in your neighborhood, but you also will be a part of a national movement to protect our core Republican principles.” Without the help these volunteers give, elections in the US would take more time, effort, and money from the federal government. And people’s participation in political parties would be a lot lower. Through the help of the political parties and the volunteers they are able to generate, elections for our government are easier than ever.

George Washington was entitled to his own opinions on political parties. However, political parties do more good than most people realize. They are a positive part of the government when running effectively. However, in current political times, one could argue that political parties are effectively splitting the government in half with their arguments and refusal to work together on various issues. If the two parties worked together more, the workings of the US government would run so much more smoothly they the currently do. So, the new question is, what could we do to make the two political parties work together to improve the US government?
