What is The Rocky Horror Picture show? If you are looking for something new and unique to do on a Saturday night you should consider attending one of the monthly Rocky Horror Picture Show shows put on at the Kent stage. The School of Rocky, run by David Steinberger, a graduate student at Kent State University, adds to your experience of attending a Rocky show. It as an experience you won’t get anywhere else and all people are invited to attend. The Rocky Horror Picture Show has created a cult following over the years and it seems all generations enjoy attending showings.

According to David the show usually attracts around 200–300 people however, for the larger shows such as Halloween they see attendance reach 600 -800. If you dress up (something revealing or as a character) you can attend for $5, if you prefer to not dress up you can attend for $8. Nadia Pantic, a member of the School of Rocky, the shadow cast, says all are welcome whether you have seen a show or the movie or not.

Matt Onion another member of the School of Rocky said that their audience is both young and old people from all different fields. It is a place where you can be yourself, it is a community said Nadia Pantic. Cast members switch up their roles each month and everyone adds their own spin to each role. In order to be prepared for each show the School of Rocky members watch the movie and rehearse throughout the month both in groups and on their own.

Rocky Horror Picture Show is a spoof on old horror films such as Frankenstein. The film saw the start of many careers such as Tim Curry, Susan Sarandon, Richard O’Brien and Meat Loaf. A few years after the movie came out theaters started to do showings of the film, but filled in some of the awkward pauses that bothered people by doing callbacks according to David Steinberger. The shows started to have shadow casts and callbacks and it slowly created a cult following that has continued into today. If you mention Rocky to people over the age of 25 many will know what you are referring too even if they have never seen a show or even if they don’t know what it is about.

According to Nadia most people attending a show for their first time will have no idea what is going on. It is a sensory overload in the best way possible said David and Nadia. The School of Rocky helps to add to people’s experience especially those attending for the first time, it makes it more memorable because of the audience interaction with the cast. Something unique the School of Rocky in Kent does that not every shadow cast does is every month during what is known as Lips (the song that begins the movie that is rather long) a different cast member does a performance/strip tease. Themes for Lips have included a sexy mailman and Snow White and the Evil Queen. Whoever is in charge of the Lips routine for the month creates their own idea, costumes and choreography.

To quote Nadia Pantic, “You’re not going to know what is going on, but you’re going to love it.”
