ChatGPT and the new revolution

Unless you have been living under a rock by this point probably you have heard of ChatGPT. Just in case, let me summarize it for you. Chat GPT is a chat bot that uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) model trained with Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback (RLHF). In other words is a chat bot powered by a trained artificial intelligence model that has been trained by humans in order to understand requests.

So what makes ChatGPT so interesting? Interconnecting the AI model to different data sources has and help ChatGPT to not only understand the requests but also has allowed it to gather a large amount of data and information. In other words, is not only capable to understand us but it has a bunch of knowledge in all different areas. This makes ChatGPT potentially your best allied for … virtually anything.

ChatGPT was opened to the public and allowed free access to the tool while the research preview phase. At this moment they still allow trial access, giving any new account $18 in credit to use the platform. In this short period of time lots of people came across the AI engine and started exploring the options.

What makes ChatGPT so special, when comparing to previous AI, is its ability to understand human language in such detailed way and the vast amount of data that it has access to. At this moment ChatGPT does not have access to the entire internet but rather to a curated set of databases that should prevent the AI from encountering some less than desirable information.

So far we have heard about Chat GPT but being realistic the most interesting part is what it can do for us. Here is where it gets interesting because I have seen people using ChatGPT in so many ways that I can not provide a complete list as I do not recall all of the options. Nevertheless, in order to showcase you the potential of ChatGPT let me provide some examples:

Chat GPT can be used to configure devices:

I have seen chatGPT generate tool integration configuration, docker compose and other configs. This can help some professionals to get their jobs done faster. Moreover it can also help young professionals to learn and troubleshoot potential issues.

Chat GPT in Cybersecurity:

I have seen Chat GPT being used in different ways; on the blue side I have seen ChatGPT being able to generate incident response playbooks, provide step by step commands on filtering logs in a SIEM, explain how we can identify a threat. Even explain which tools are more appropriate for a specific method and how to use them.

On the red side I have seen ChatGPT being used in order to get the proper commands on how to scan a network and a device. And this is not only asking the chat bot on how to use NMAP, which can be easily done, but also it includes requesting Chat GPT to scan the network and the chat guide you through understanding which tools you can use, how to download them and use them. After the scanner it will be able to guide you through other reconnaissance techniques like dirbuster or explains how to pwn certain machines if you are able to ask the right questions guiding the chatbot through the different steps.

Chat GPT as a coder:

I have seen lot of non technical people being able to generate small scripts. And even set those scripts as cron jobs so they would execute regularly. All this only by typing in the chat box what is that they needed to accomplish.

This is not only true for scripts, but I have seen chat GPT writing pieces of code for a bigger project. Chat GPT can also troubleshoot pieces of code, and even tell you what pieces of code can do. As an example we can use this feature also in cybersecurity, I have seen chat GPT analyzing pieces of Malware and explain how certain code can cause damage to a computer.

Chat GPT as a book writer:

I have seen several people using chat GPT in order to write booklets of 50 pages, and to assist on writing books of 100s of pages. Moreover, I have seen Chat GPT being used to write articles, linked-in posts, and other quality content.

And this content is not limited to one or another topic. It can be related to anything that is contained within the databases that the chat bot has access to. And shortly, after it is connected to the internet it will be able to write texts regarding anything.

Chat GPT as a marketing specialist:

I have seen the chat bot to be able to generate marketing content; catchphrases, slogans, and marketing pamphets. Even company presentations that are engaging for a specific type of public!

Moreover Chat GPT connects to a hyper-realistic graphics engine called DALL·E 2 pronounced like the famous artist (Salvador Dalí). And therefore it can create logos, images, and schemas.

Any role that you can think of:

I have seen the chat bot answer questions with the information that it gathered taking different roles. An example of this is when I saw someone use chat GPT in order to get some psychological advice, and Chat GPT replied with some great insights on the advice requested.

On the other hand I have seen the chat bot being used in order to generate job descriptions, interview questions, and other recruiting jobs.

So what is so exciting about all this things besides the fact that we can get all this services from a single “provider”. The activities listed above can seem not that important as they can also be done by regular humans. The main difference is that the AI can do it in a much more efficient and concise way. How long do you think that the chat bot took to write a 50 page booklet? 20 mins.

Therefore we have right now an amazing tool that can be used in order to help us to become much more efficient and effective. I am sure that we will start seeing how Chat GPT will soon start being used behind some of the top technological products, like phones, computers, search engines, smart speakers and much more! Actually as of Jan 4 2022 Microsoft is in negotiations with OpenAI in order to incorporate ChatGPT in the Bing browser.

I wrote a followup article regarding the Advantages and Risks of using AI in our daily lives with a focus on cybersecurity:
