What are some of the critical elements to include in a tiny house?

I have reviewed dozens and dozens of tiny house floor plans. I have spoken to and read about how many people use their tiny homes. It has become clear that there are distinct elements of design that seem to be critical to liveability and quality of living.

Walls take away space, the best tiny houses all are as open as possible with minimal interior walls.

Square and rectangular units work much better, both for ease of living but also for fitting furniture and fittings.

Make the most of all the corners and wall space. High storage for less used items can free up much space at eye level to hand level that can be used for items that are used more frequently.

Full height floor to ceiling storage is the way to go.

Closets that contain both the mechanical systems, the laundry appliances and some extra space for coats and other items work well. Another design feature that works very well is a kitchen countertop that’s designed to seat people all around. So it functions both as a kitchen work surface and a full table for four people, not just a countertop dining for two.

Large full height windows not only bring in great natural light but also opens up space significantly. Providing a large window to each zone of the property will substantially increase livability.

Access to a terrace, garden or balcony adds a considerable amount of perceived space for occupants. This could be a communal garden, patio or private balcony to the unit.

When considering the design of any scale property, a lot of these elements will help improve the function, usability and livability. The importance of these design elements is magnified on smaller properties and become far more critical to the success of the property.

Whenever you are planning on going smaller, spend significant time on the design.
