How Sexual Trauma Affects Young Brains

As a medical practitioner, Dr. Koock Jung specialized in psychiatry. His primary focus of interest includes PTSD and sexual trauma. Dr. Koock Jung also wrote the book, Sexual Trauma — A Challenge Not Insanity.

Any form of trauma can affect a young individual’s brain functions. It can result in learning difficulties and behavioral problems that can linger until adulthood. Among the forms of trauma, sexual trauma is one of the worst, as it not only elicits feelings of fear and mistrust but also of anger and shame.

For young students, trauma can affect more than just behavior. They may also have issues with cognitive function to the point that they may have trouble focusing on and performing simple activities. They may also suffer from memory lapses, with the youngest victims even forgetting how to recite and write the alphabet.

Because the “fight or flight” responses in trauma patients are heightened, the brain’s memory and learning centers are typically slowed down. The brain defaults to protective mode, protecting the child from processing fear. As a result, the brain is unable to properly develop and process new information and knowledge. Students suffering from sexual trauma typically come off as disengaged, forgetful, and unfocused.
